AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE
Filmed over the course of eight years in his homeland of Slovakia, renowned cinematographer Martin Kollar’s second feature rides the line between fiction and non-fiction to form a collective portrait of a contemporary reality that is in a constant state of flux, where industry and urbanisation transmute traditional customs and nature itself. Kollar’s stylised cinematography captures the everyday actions performed by Chronicle’s subjects in largely static long takes, revealing a familiarity that is draped in absurdism. Their customs and quotidian habits, though peculiar, create an archive for the future.
Chronicle does not try to answer questions or explain its subjects, instead its ambiguity and observational style asks us to reflect on our own actions and ultimately to hold onto our long-held customs before they are forgotten.
Chronicle will be preceded by the short film What if We Run Out of Stones (Nora Štrbová, 2025, Czech Republic, 7 min).
“It is as if Kollar has involved a whole country, its people and animals, the landscape and even atmospheric phenomena in an inexplicable ritual.” — Sergio Fant, Visions du Réel
